Epoxy coatings are used because of their outstanding chemical resistance, durability, low porosity and strong bond strength. It’s one of the most highly used and highly recommended floor covering system you can acquire. There are many manufactures of epoxies and for the majority they all have the same molecular make up. Various are of water base type and these are becoming more popular as the technology has resulted in the development of high performance VOC coatings. There has been more demand in the construction industry for Green Star Rated Projects hence the growing technology in the VOC epoxy coating range.
Types of Epoxies:
Solvent Based Epoxy contain solvents to help the resin penetrate and bond into the surface of the concrete, encourage easy application and good coverage (lower consumption per square metre). Solvent based epoxies are fast curing (drying and hardening) and can generally provide good abrasion and chemical resistance.
Solvent-Free Epoxy is a coating to which solvents are not deliberately added while manufactured therefore reducing the viscosity. In this regard solvent-free epoxies are zero or have very low VOC’s. This means that they have very much higher epoxy resin content – and so they are used in much thicker protective layers on the floor to give higher abrasion and chemical resistance to the surface which also enables work to be done in food prep areas without any smells.
Water Based Epoxy are the most eco-friendly of the three systems. No smells or fumes to breathe in, safer working conditions in and around people and where not destroying the ozone layer. Over the last ten years the technology and performance coming out of water based epoxies are likely to surpass solvent based epoxies. There are high build epoxies, express epoxy systems and also UV stable epoxies. There is a water based system available for your needs.
